The Reserve was declared a protected area for the preservation and protection of the only natural habitat of the horse chestnut tree species, a Balkan endemic in Bulgaria, a preserved remnant of a once extensive forest. It is located on both banks of the gorge of the river. It is situated on both sides of the Dervishka river as a narrow strip parallel to the ravine.
