Panagyurishte is the only town in Bulgaria that has a colony – the village of Panagyurski colonii, Municipality of Panagyurishte. For the first time, a children's camp (colony) was organized in the locality in 1907. Panagyurski Colonii was founded as a summer resort villa settlement in the early 1930s. Nearby there was a summer camp building of the Men's High School in Plovdiv, built in the 1920s.
The town was the centre of the April Uprising and was the capital of Bulgaria for 10 days.
