Even Rome considered this place a strategic crossroads. This is evidenced by the historical hill ASARA, which rises in the northern part of the town.
Remains of the fortress, which was also used in the Bulgarian Middle Ages, are preserved on the hill. In 1988, archaeological excavations were carried out. As a result of them, archaeologists made up the following timeline, according to the chronology of the cultural layers:
Early Iron Age 1st millennium BC
Early Byzantine period 4th - 6th century
Early Bulgarian period 9th - 10th century
Middle Bulgarian period 11th - 12th century
Late Bulgarian period 13th – 14th century
The fortress guarded the Hainboaz pass and had three rows of fortress walls. The only other fortress on the territory of Bulgaria that has three rows of fortress walls is Tsarevets in Veliko Tarnovo. On the Asara hill, also the legendary Tsarska Dupka (en: Tzar’s hole), now a buried cave entrance, is located.
The town of Nikolaevo was named after the Russian general Nikolay Nikolaevich.
Nikolevo was declared a town on August 18, 1977.
