Silistra

Silistra is the last Bulgarian port on the Danube before the river gets into Romanian territory. Successor of the ancient Durostorum and medieval Drustur, the town today is almost entirely declared the Durostorum – Drustur – Silistra National Archeological Reserve. Durostorum was a self-governing Roman city, the seat of one of the elite units (XI Claudia Legion) and the birthplace of Flavius Aetius – patrician, consul, supreme commander of the Roman Empire, vanquisher of the Huns and Attila, known as the "Last of the Romans." In addition to the ancient city ruins on the Danube bank, the Roman Tomb is a unique site with entirely painted walls and ceiling.

Another of Silistra's landmarks is the Turkish Medjidi Tabia Fortress, which is among the best preserved fortification system points from the times of Turkish rule. On the other hand, the Silistra Danube Park is the first public park in Bulgaria. It is a place for relaxation and sport, offering wonderful views of the beautiful Danube sunsets. Srebarna Biosphere Park is located on the migratory bird route from Europe to Africa – Via Pontica, and it attracts tourists from all over the world.
