Tutrakan, once a fishing village that emerged on top of the ruins of the Roman Transmariska Fortress, faces the Danube and lives in harmony with the river. Of particular interest are the expositions of the Museum of History and the Museum of Fishing and Boat Building, which is unique for the Danube region. During its millennia-long existence, the town has been associated with fishing, weaving of fishing nets and maintaining boat workshops as family livelihood. This means of living has been authentically recreated in Ribarska Mahala Architecture Reserve – a naturally developed fishing village from the National Revival Era with a preserved architectural appearance.
Visitors of the Military Tomb — 1916 Memorial, located a few kilometres away from the town, can experience another historical period. The memorial serves as an ossuary for over 8000 casualties of the Bulgarian army's biggest battle for the Tutrakan Fortress, which marked the beginning of the liberation march in Dobruja.
