In the middle of the 15th century, the fortresses of Ruse and Giurgiu were conquered by Vlach Voivode Vlad III, who impailed about 6000 of the enemy soldiers. Because of this deed in Ruse, the voivode was named Tsepesh (Impaler). The Museum of Urban Life in Ruse, also known as the Kaliopa House, is related to Midhat Pasha, who came to Ruschuk as the wali of the Danube Vilayet in 1864. According to urban legends, Midhat Pasha built the elegant building for the woman who caught his interest — Kaliopa. He fell in love with her and wanted to give her a special gift.
