The Surova National Festival traditionally takes place every year on the 13th and 14th of January in dozens of villages in Pernik. The ones who directly carry out this old tradition are the Surva masquerade groups, which include over 2,500 participants, who during those days dance and go around the villages as heralds of the transition from the old year to the new. The Surova Festival is included in the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage.
