Nearly every Danube municipality is proud to have a Roman cultural and historical heritage site on its territory. Thorough the entire Danube Tourist Region runs the northern border of the Roman Empire – the Danube Roman Limes (from Latin: limes - border). Some of the most interesting remains of the Roman fortification system are the Ancient Fortress of Bononia (Vidin), the Roman city of Ulpia Oescus (Gigen village), the Dimum Road Station and Ancient Castle (Belene), the ancient city of Nove (Svishtov), the ancient fortress of Sexaginta Prista (Ruse), the ancient cities of Transmariska (Tutrakan), Durostorum (Silistra) and Abritus Archaeological Reserve (Razgrad).
